Thanks to the Student Activities Council, Baker University students had the chance to enjoy a second spring break with such activities as movie night, mechanical bull riding, casino night and various live performances.
Director of Student Activities Shelby Coxon said the members of SAC spent a lot of time the past two months planning the events for this year’s Springfest. She said the event is done by SAC every year.
Coxon said this is the time of year when everything gets really hectic for students and that the weeks’ events are a good way for students to take a break from the semester’s demands.
“It’s just a good time each year to get everybody together and relax a little,” Coxon said.
Senior Blair Spencer said she planned on going to as many events as possible, homework and schedule permitting. She said she likes that Springfest breaks up the monotony of classes and lessens the stress at the end of the year.
“The end of the spring semester really seems to bog me down,” Spencer said
Freshman Drew Franks said he thinks the idea of Springfest is brilliant, even though some might not have time to participate due to the increased workload at the end of the semester. He said he was looking forward to Pomeroy’s performance. He said he thinks it is great to bring live entertainment to a small venue like Baker.
“It gets people involved towards the end of the year when everyone just wants to leave,” Franks said. “It’s entertainment and gets people outside.”
Spencer said she thinks Springfest is a is a chance to bring students who choose to participate together and most students would be able to find the time despite their busy schedules.
“It’s usually just kind of fun to get together with people on campus and enjoy the spring,” she said.
Freshman Kendra Schaefer said even though she had a test Wednesday, she still wanted to participate in as many of the scheduled events as much as possible. She said she thinks Springfest is a good idea because it gets students involved in activities outside of the classroom.
Coxon said the amount spent on Springfest is different each year and depends a lot on what goes on. She estimated about $8,000 spent this year. She said they can never judge how many people are going to show up, either.
“We just have to buy a lot of stuff and see what happens,” Coxon said.
According to the Wildcat Wire, Springfest events will conclude tonight with a Mardi Gras themed dance at the Salt Mine from 10:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Beads will be provided at the door.
