Spiking Out Domestic Violence has returned again this year in hopes of uniting the campus while promoting awareness, Amanda Haas, vice president of fraternity relations at Alpha Chi Omega, said.
Spiking Out Domestic Violence is an annual volleyball tournament hosted by Alpha Chi Omega as part of their national philanthropy.
The tournament is a fund-raiser for the Women’s Transitional Care Services who support victims of domestic violence.
The tournament begins at 10 a.m. April 22 at the Sigma Phi Epsilon house. Only single gender teams are being allowed this year. Registration is required to participate and $50 per team is being charged.
A traditional round robin tournament style will be used, with games being played at all four fraternity houses.
Promoting awareness in a fun way is a big part of the tournament, Haas said.
“Really we want to raise as much money as possible,” Haas said. “We also want to raise awareness about domestic violence. If we can have fun and unite the campus by making sure everyone can participate than we accomplished our goal.”
Haas said she did most of the organizing for the event, along with the help of junior Jon Xenos, a Sigma Phi Epsilon member.
“My role was getting the food all ready to go and communicating with Alpha Chi,” Xenos said. “Most of the credit should go to Amanda Haas, she worked really hard.”
Xenos said he would like to see more campus wide participation.
