To the editor:
Imagine an environment where one can socialize comfortably with friends in a laidback and relaxing atmosphere. Is there music in the background? Of course. Imagine also an environment where one can study calmly, focused and uninterrupted. Is there music in the background? Possibly. The question is this: why do we not have music playing in the cafeteria during meals, or especially during lunch? I personally feel, and I am joined by many fellow students, that music in the cafeteria would create a more sociable and comfortable – dare I say enjoyable – eating environment. That’s not to say that students would prefer eating in the cafeteria to eating in the Wildcat Café or that meal plan sales would skyrocket, but really, what cost would such a change incur on the school? While the sound equipment in the cafeteria goes unused, and the campus radio station “The Edge” cites low numbers of listeners, it seems to me a no-brainer. Tune the cafeteria in to the campus radio station! More than likely people would realize that while in Baldwin City, there is a great radio station that goes unnoticed, that is driven by their peers’ efforts and that plays great music. So as an observant student, I implore you, do us all a favor and play music in the cafeteria.
