A 3-1 win over Culver-Stockton College Tuesday put the Baker University volleyball team at a tie for second place in the Heart of America Athletic Conference with a record of 18-18.
Head coach Kathy Allen said her team held strong on the home court.
“We were ranked ahead of them,” Allen said. “We did what we were supposed to do. They played us pretty tough.”
Assistant coach Emily Grabner said playing at home is good for the ‘Cats.
“Overall, we did very well against (Culver-Stockton),” Grabner said. “We always do well at home matches. It was a pretty important game, so it’s a good thing we pulled through.”
The entire season was full of tough competition and the conference play this past week resulted in several ties, Grabner said.
“It was kind of complicated this year,” she said. “I hoped we’d get first. We didn’t finish as high as I thought we would.”
The tough competition will continue as the conference play-off games begin at 7 p.m. Saturday. The ‘Cats will play Evangel University at home.
Grabner said the ‘Cats beat Evangel earlier this year, but both teams have been improving throughout the season.
Although the Wildcats have prepared, it will not be an easy win against Evangel, Grabner said.
“It’s going to be extremely intense competition,” she said. “It’s going to be a pretty big fight. We should be point to point with them the entire match. “
