The fact that students need to get out and vote has been identified, mentioned, reiterated and just about bludgeoned into the minds of Baker University community members over the last few weeks.
Regardless of how much it’s been said, it should be said again – vote.
We, as the future of educated America, are the future of America’s place in the world.
It is our privilege to have the ability to play a role in the future of our communities, our state and our nation.
Think about it – for students who can hardly make their minds up about what to wear to this weekend’s fraternity party, we have been given a chance to hold the reigns in a race which represents something much more important than ourselves.
Though we are guaranteed the right to vote as equals, we as citizens of the United States of America are not guaranteed the right to suffrage through our constitution.
Therefore, it is a grave injustice against ourselves, let alone the nation, to sit idly by and allow others to take advantage of that equal opportunity while our own voices go unheard.
Many students may fail to see how the issues plaguing the political scene today have an impact on the lives of college-aged men and women.
These students are dead wrong, and this view is all too shortsighted.
Firstly, we are only students for a brief period of time.
While it’s easy to ignore the real world now, all too soon we will be thrust into that big, scary place, and the big, scary policies that pass through our political system now are definitely going to have an impact.
Secondly, being a student really is the best reason to vote.
We are in the prime stage of critical thinking.
We have a world of resources at our fingertips – resources in the form of educators, as well as fellow free thinkers who surround us on a daily basis.
If there’s something we don’t understand, there’s really nothing stopping us from getting whatever information we need to reach that point of understanding.
Regardless of where you fall into the political scheme, inform yourself and make yourself useful this Tuesday.
Do it for yourself, do it for your future and do it for your country.
