Even with the threat of airline terror, Baker University's study abroad program numbers are flourishing.
This year a total of 46 students are studying abroad compared with last year's number of 25. This fall, seven Baker students are studying at Harlaxton College in Grantham, England, while four others are studying abroad with other programs. In the spring, 35 students will be going overseas, with 22 planning to study at Harlaxton and 13 studying elsewhere.
Director of Study Abroad Cindy Novelo said many benefits come from studying in other countries, including the chance to learn another language and experience an entirely different culture and the opportunity to view America from a new perspective. Study-abroad students sometimes also have an advantage with a job search, as many employers appreciate the experienced gained abroad.
"Studying abroad can, in many ways, be very life changing," Novelo said.
Sophomore Chad Cross said he plans on studying at Harlaxton in the spring. Cross said he is also excited to live outside the country and stay for an extended period of time. Even with the threat of airline terror, Cross said he is not scared, nor is he packing any differently.
"The only thing I'm worried about is having to live out of only two bags for the four months that I'm there," Cross said.
The cost of studying abroad ranges anywhere from $7,000 to $20,000. Interested students can pick up information from Novelo, whose office is located on the bottom floor of Collins Library.
