Creating awareness of political issues on the Baker University campus has become a main goal of the Young Democrats organization, which meets at 6 p.m. every Wednesday.
Typical concerns of the Young Democrats include women’s health, environmental issues and the election process, which will be taking place soon for the mid-term elections.
Junior Kelly Vaughan is involved with Young Democrats and is trying to get everyone to register.
“We plan to go door to door, and set up tables and ask people if they’re registered to vote,” she said.
Kat Conoley, another member of Young Democrats, said she tries to learn all she can about each candidate.
“I did a lot of research on candidates to find out why they deserve to be in office,” Conoley said.
Faculty sponsor Bruce Anderson said the members of Young Democrats are part of the organization because they want to be involved politically.
“A lot of the students that join are politically active in some way, and the reason why students join is it’s a great way to channel their energy,” he said.
