Baker University art students gain experience through the student-run gallery, Art Affair.
Senior Kali Pope, who is an art history major, is directing Art Affair this year. The gallery is completely student run, which Pope said distinguishes Art Affair from many other university-affiliated galleries.
The next show will be from 7-9 p.m. on Sept. 15 and is named the John Talleur Print Studio, which features a group from Lawrence made up of 10 to 12 different artists.
“The show is showing the process of how the artists personally develop their images,” Pope said.
Beginning Oct. 20, three artists will be featured at the gallery: photographer Tina Jonas and a couple that does woodworking. The last show of the semester will be the Holiday show, opening Nov. 17, where a variety of pieces will be available for purchase as gifts.
Pope, along with other students involved with Art Affair, contacts artists, sets up shows, advertises and handles the business side of running a gallery. The only faculty member who helps the students is Professor of Art Inge Balch.
“I take care of what needs to be taken care of when the students need help,” Balch said. “… I try to let the students learn as much as they can by themselves.”
Balch said she is proud of the students who are running the gallery right now. “I’ve got some confident students running it,” Balch said. “It’s a good place.”
