Baker University Student Senate has wrapped up freshman elections and now executive officers plan on assigning members of senate to certain standing committees in order to accomplish goals.
Public Relations Officer Jacinta Deruso said only 51 freshmen voted for their president, vice president and secretary-treasurer.
“I am kind of disappointed in how many people came out for the polls,” Deruso said. “As a matter of fact, there was more hype for people wanting to vote, than actually voted.”
Deruso said Kisha Dodson was elected freshman class president, Latoya Smith was elected vice president and Kristen Shelton was elected secretary-treasurer. The freshman class executive officers appointed Tricia Shelton, Jessica Porter and Jesse Kern freshman class representatives.
Deruso said the senate can focus on making standing committees and accomplishing more long-term goals now that elections are finished.
“Now we’ll actually have quorum every week, providing that people show up, and with the standing committees we’ll actually get things done,” she said.
Vice President Ashley Locklin said executive officers will assign members of senate to certain committees this year because they want to see more involvement.
“As for campus issues and stuff, (members of student senate) just don’t have a structured form of a committee,” Locklin said. “We’re kind of hoping this year, if we sort out and force people to be on a committee, they’re going to be more structured, they’re going to be more organized, they’re going to have a lot more stuff to accomplish, to get done.”
Treasurer Michelle Burton said designating members of student senate to certain committees limits the resentment between members of classes.
“It creates less friction because, it’s like, no one gets their first choice – you get our first choice, and then you love what you do because it’s the only choice you have,” Burton said.
Student senate is not meeting Tuesday, but Burton said members should be informed at the Oct. 10 meeting of what committee they have been assigned to.
