Staying the night in cardboard boxes, asking for money from strangers and not sleeping all night are just some of the things the Baker Ambassadors are doing to raise money.
Today the Ambassadors are doing a homeless simulation to make people aware of the problem with homelessness.
“I volunteered to be the head of this,” Senior Betsy Daniel said. “This is our first event of the month.”
Marla Potter, secretary to Minister to the University Ira DeSpain, is also involved in the project. She said the Ambassadors are doing the homeless simulation to experience the situation of being homeless and to educate others about the experience. The project will also serve as a fund-raiser.
“It’s more so to help out the community and bring awareness,” she said.
The money raised will go to the First United Methodist Church of Baldwin City’s Emergency Relief Fund to help pay power bills and other things for people in need. Two years ago $1,100 was raised for this fund.
The Ambassadors will go around Baldwin City carrying cardboard boxes to stay the night in and will be asking people for money, as the homeless do.
“It starts at 5:30 (p.m.), and they’ll be up at 7:30 (a.m.),” Potter said. “Kind of (to) experience a night out like the homeless would.”
Sophomore Amber Hauder is looking forward to the event.
“I’m really excited about it,” Hauder said. “It should be a lot of fun. It’s eye-opening.”
