Greek unity will be the theme of this year’s Greek Week, which will have two new participants, as well as new events.
All next week, events meant to foster healthy competition and promote unity in Baker University’s greek population will be held, Director of Greek Life Bryan VanOsdale said.
“This is a week set aside where greeks can be celebratory,” VanOsdale said. “It’s the end of the year, and we want to mark all of the positive things that have happened. It’s about unity and coming together to have a good time.”
The events will be put on by the greek honor society Order of Omega and will feature new events, said senior Jon Xenos, an Order of Omega member.
Senior Megan Lamb, president of Order of Omega, said new to this year’s greek week are the scavenger hunt, Gong Show, a dessert during the awards reception and the kickball tournament.
Xenos elaborated on the reason behind the changes.
“The goal was to improve the week to get more participation than in the years past,” he said. “We wanted to make it more fun and to strengthen communication and bonds among the greek community.”
Lamb agreed that the addition of “more fun” was one reason for the new events.
“We tried to add a new twist, to have a fun theme that was more college-student oriented,” she said. “There will be competition, but the point is to mix it up among the greeks and get to know each other and build upon the greek unity that already exists on Baker’s campus.”
This year’s events will include the participation of two additions to the greek community: the Zeta Phi Beta sorority and the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, VanOsdale said.
Lamb said she views the addition of two new organizations as a positive development.
“I am really excited to have two new members to add to our community,” she said. “They will be included in all the events and will participate in all of them. We will still have a balance between fraternities and sororities, but we are looking forward to having a new dynamic.”
New awards have been added to this year’s awards ceremony, which will honor both greek people and organizations, Xenos said.
Lamb said the awards will include the greek man and woman of the year, most improved chapter, excellence in philanthropy and an award for overall participation in Greek Week.
