The Holiday Art Sale organized by the Baldwin Community Arts Council may be a good place to find a handmade gift for that hard-to-shop-for friend or family member this Christmas.
Departmental Assistant Barb Coffey said the sale, which takes place from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at the Lumberyard Arts Center, is an annual event she has been involved in for three years as a member of the BCAC.
“Our mission is to promote all the arts in Baldwin City,” she said.
Coffey said 10 percent of proceeds from this year’s sales would be donated toward the renovation of the Lumberyard Arts Center in downtown Baldwin City.
She said there is a wide range of items being offered from photography to handmade wooden ballpoint pens.
“I would just like the students to be aware of the sale and what the local artists are producing,” Coffey said. “It will be a good place for students to take a break from their studies and do some Christmas shopping.”
Administrative Assistant Myra Glover said the items offered at the art sale would be available to the students at a full range of prices from less than $20 to $300.
“This Holiday Art Sale gives local artists a venue for sale,” she said.
Glover said in addition to the Holiday Art Sale, people who support the arts in Baldwin City decorate tables for the season and the Creative Holiday Tables display, which will take place from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at the Baldwin City Public Library.
Software Support Phyllis Nelson said she has been making pottery for more than 30 years.
“The Lumberyard Arts Center is a cornerstone of Baldwin,” she said. “Its layout will lend itself nicely to theater productions and other art activities.”
Nelson said some of her work for sale would be bowls, candleholders, toothbrush holders and plates. The pieces are all functional, microwavable and dishwasher safe and will be available at reasonable prices.
“These are things that are handmade and not Wal-Mart produced,” Nelson said.
