With the fall sports seasons over, Baker University athletes are being recognized for their performances. Eight athletes were named to Heart of America Athletic Conference All-Conference first teams, with others making the second and third team lists.
“Baker is going to be competing for the top spot in the conference and has become competitive in all sports,” junior Jayde Allen said. “Baker is one school everyone will look out for.”
Junior Derek Doerfler was chosen as the All-Conference first team kicker and was the only Baker football player to be named to the first team on offense. Doerfler was also named as the HAAC Player of the Year. Cornerback Eric Allen was named first team All-Conference.
“Kickers never get recognized,” Doerfler said. “This is why it makes being recognized that much better.”
Eight players from the women’s soccer team made HAAC All-Conference teams, led by freshmen Christine Janssens and Jennifer Sampson, who are first team members. Midfielder Gina Schiraldi and defender Chelsea Dunn were named second team All-Conference and goalie Pam Brummit, freshman Haley Oborny and midfielders Mikayla Medlock and Rachel Shepard made the All-Conference third team.
Juniors Allen and Alexis Pryor claimed two of the 12 first team All-Conference volleyball team spots. Allen also is conference Libero of the Year. Senior Kelly Wilbur was named to the All-Conference second team and senior Katie Jaschke and sophomore Michaela Marak were All-Conference Honorable Mention.
“(Allen and Pryor) had a huge impact on the team in two different ways,” coach Kathy Allen said. “Pryor was great on offense with scoring, and Allen was important on defense with her saving.”
Senior soccer player Ryan McAloon was rewarded with an All-Conference first team selection. McAloon was also named as an All-American Honorable Mention and an All-Region first team member. Sophomore Matt Germain, another Baker soccer player, was also named to the All-Conference first team. Goalie Alex Burton and midfielder Travis Moore were selected for the All-Conference second team.
Four cross country runner received awards. Juniors Amber Keith, Shawnee Barron and Katie James and senior Andrew McGregor were named National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Academic Scholars.
