The recently converted University of Kansas football fans deserved what happened to them last weekend at Arrowhead Stadium.
As an active member of the ZOU crew, I admit my argument is certainly stemmed from years of Jayhawk-hating, and for the true Kansas football faithful, this column is not directed toward you. Kansas is having an unbelievable season, one that should be celebrated. This success, however, has caused the Hawk football bandwagon to be mounted more than Paris Hilton.
The abundance of born again KU football fans in our area wouldn’t bother me, so long as they stay KU football fans. Half of them are flakier than a Head and Shoulders commercial. KU went 11-1 for the first time in well, ever, and many of them still aren’t satisfied.
After losing 36-28 to Missouri, KU fans who attended the game could be heard yelling “Wait ’til basketball,” and “Hey, it was still a good season” in the Arrowhead parking lot. No fair-weather fans, it is a good season. Have they already given up on the dream season and jumped off that bandwagon they boarded in September?
Kansas got beat by a better team Saturday, and now all us Mizzou fans can hear is how poorly Kansas played. The fans of the fifth-ranked Jayhawks are acting as if the season is over. Depending on how the Mizzou-Oklahoma rematch pans out (and how those wacky computers figure things), KU could play in the Fiesta Bowl-its first BCS Bowl since the 1948 Orange Bowl.
That’s not a typo; in terms of hype, Kansas hasn’t had a season comparable to 2007 since shortly after WWII. Yet they are already looking to move indoors to Allen Fieldhouse where they can always support the winning team. How convenient. Frankly, I feel bad for Mark Mangino. His fans are either unable to cope with cold weather or have absurdly high expectations.
Which brings me to my next point: Kansas “newcomer” fans are delusional. The mild supporters who, after a few wins, turn into Lee Corso on speed drive me insane. Half of them didn’t even know who Todd Reesing was until he dismantled K-State’s defense, and even so they still referred to him as “that one dude.”
Just last week a girl with layers of Jayhawk clothing, who claimed to be “the biggest KU fan ever,” told me that Aqib Talib was “like, a place in the Middle East.” He’s actually, like, KU’s best player. It’s this lack of knowledge that makes bandwagoners’ hopes so ridiculously high. Last year, the Jayhawks went 6-6 and failed to reach a bowl game, and just one year later the “wannabe-die hards” are down on KU because they failed to remain perfect.
So KU fans, as we fans embark on another college basketball season, one that will surely bring success for the beloved Jayhawks, don’t forget what your football team was able to accomplish this season. In case you don’t know (you probably don’t because you think Aqib Talib is a freaking city in Iraq), Kansas’ football team is returning several of its key players to next year’s squad, guys like Reesing, Talib, Jake Sharp, Kerry Meier, Mike Rivera and Dezmon Briscoe.
Hence, it is decision time Hawk fans. Either stay on that football bandwagon, or get off for good because everyone else is tired of your spotty fanhood. If one loss was simply too much and you choose to stay off, a word of advice: Move to New England. You’d fit right in; they win everything up there. is how poorly Kansas played.
