For years the Baker Orange staff has been writing editorials about student apathy, so it is nice to hear about students actually caring about something as passionately as they do – Earth We Are’s “Trayless Thursdays.”
Too bad students don’t care about saving the planet.
Too bad they don’t care about the 40 pounds of waste that are eliminated each meal trays aren’t used.
Too bad it’s not water they are worried about. Twenty gallons are saved each meal trays aren’t used.
No, instead what students care about is the fact they can’t be lazy anymore. Well, at least they can’t one meal a week. One out of the 17 meals served each week in the cafeteria.
At least students are caring right?
Too bad the passion can’t be expressed in an adult manner.
Students were even given a choice to voice their opinions on “Trayless Thursdays.” Instead, students are bending silverware, carving graffiti on tables and leaving their food for others to clean up.
Some did express their opposition.
“It’s stoopid,” read one comment from Earth We Are’s comment box. “Stoopid,” huh?
Another student must have missed a few days of LA 101 when students were taught how to think logically.
“The world is eventually going to end, so why slow down the process,” one comment card reads. “Let’s live for the here and now. I don’t give a (expletive) about future generations.”
It’s a good thing generations before us didn’t feel that way.
Apparently multiple students forgot how to think logically.
“Why don’t we eat raw food off the floor with no lights on and no air conditioning like animals. At least we’d save electricity and lumber.”
Another comment was a personal attack on EWA members.
“Take a shower you dirty hippies,” the comment read.
It must be rough for some people to go without a tray. They have to make multiple trips through the lunch line. It’s inconvenient and takes a bit more time.
With attitudes like that, it’s a good thing we live in America – the land of abundance. We don’t have to worry about things like rice shortages or the privatization of water. That would really be an inconvenience. Instead, food and drink are both readily available if we are willing to make an extra trip to get it.
