Sometimes in sports it’s not about quantity, but rather quality and more importantly timing.
Junior Matt Germain has 20 career goals for the Baker soccer team, with two of those being clutch, game-winning goals to keep the Wildcats’ seasons alive on two different occasions.
A two time all-conference midfielder, Germain will be remembered by Baker soccer fans as the one with the last–second heroics to net the game-winning goal 30 seconds into overtime against Park University in the opening-round game of the NAIA National Tournament in November of 2008.
The 19-year-old was carried off the field by an ecstatic group of teammates and fans as the victory made history as the first Baker victory in the national tournament in school history.
Had this been Germain’s only big-game performance, it would have been impressive enough, but a similar outcome came off the foot of Germain in the quarterfinals of the HAAC Tournament in 2007.
Germain again ended the game for the Wildcats with a goal against Lindenwood to advance to the semifinal game.
If Germain can continue to pad his impressive stat sheet – and maybe net another field-storming worthy tally – he might just need to be immortalized in stone.
