We would simply like to express our frustration and disappointment with Baker University Student Senate after the Tuesday meeting.
The women of Alpha Chi Omega approached senate in the hopes of receiving a portion of the funds needed to attend the National Convention in Washington, D.C. Through granting the request of $300, these funds would have covered approximately 5 percent of the total cost for five chapter members to attend the convention. It was proposed that these funds would have gone directly to the opportunity for members to attend a multitude of presentations regarding topics such as: volunteering, leadership on campus and in the community and financial responsibility.
Questions were posed as to how attending the convention would benefit other organizations on campus. We feel as though the women of Alpha Chi Omega are well represented in a multitude of student-centered organizations on campus, as well as organizations off campus. By attending the National Convention, members bring back valuable qualities that are utilized throughout the chapter, as well as within the Baker community.
What we find most frustrating is that senate is supposed to be an organization for which respective representative students can go to as a means of expressing need or concern.
Even more so, senate has chosen in the past to grant organizations funds for much more frugal things (T-shirts for organizations, television, etc). These things, in our opinion, don’t necessarily benefit campus as a whole. This is one reason we feel Alpha Chi Omega was denied our proposed amount of funds.
It is our only hope that this lack of support won’t discourage other student organizations from asking for support, whether financial or not, of student senate. We would, however, like to take this opportunity to thank all those in attendance for listening to our proposal.
