At the final Baker University Student Senate meeting of the semester President Caleb Watts announced that junior Devin Freeman had been appointed the new senate secretary.
Current secretary, junior Anna Richards, will be studying abroad next semester.
“I took a lower executive job at Alpha Chi (Omega sorority) and I had more time and I just wanted to do something that I’ve never done before,” Freeman said.
Watts said he was not in the room when the other senate officers voted on the new secretary.
Watts wanted to remain unbiased in the vote because he and Freeman are in a relationship.
“People probably just assumed ‘Oh, Caleb is the president, Devin will just get it … ,” Freeman said. “It was very unbiased. He wasn’t allowed to say anything for me or say anything about me. He was just a listener.”
At the meeting, Up ’til Dawn was given $150 to cover the cost of an inflatable for the annual Up ’til Dawn event March 23.
“We’ve done this in the past,” Watts said. “We’ve always given money to Up ’til Dawn.”
The meeting ended with a donation of $100 per tournament soccer game to purchase snacks for students and members for the Baker community to enjoy while watching the games in Harter Union Lobby.
Senators voted that if the men’s or women’s soccer teams make it to the championship round of the NAIA National Tournament, student senate would give $200 for snacks and drinks for the BU community.
While there was a senate meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Watts announced the next meeting would not be until Jan. 17.
