The Baker University men and women’s tennis teams had their first conference meet Wednesday at Missouri Valley College.
The women’s team was missing their No. 1 and No. 4 seeds but No. 6 seed Gloria Atanmo managed to win her match.
“That was her first singles match of the season, and she pulled off the upset,” head coach Joe Ahmadian said.
Atanmo said she wanted to start the match with a lot of intensity.
”My opponent got a little feisty and said some snotty words during the match, so that also motivated me,” Atanmo said.
The men went 0-12 but sophomore Jordan Toothaker narrowly lost his singles match with a final score of 6-3, 6-4.
“Even though the score might not show it, I thought we played really well, especially (Toothaker),” Ahmadian said.
The Baker men’s team will travel to Bethel University Friday and then will play Bethany University and John Brown University Saturday in Baldwin City.
