The Baker University men’s and women’s golf teams got into the swing of things with their first tournaments of the fall season this past week.
The women’s team began the season by placing sixth at the William Jewell Fall Tune Up Sept. 8-9 in Liberty, Mo.
Senior Stacy Yowell led the ’Cats with a 21st place finish by shooting rounds of 88 and 97, and junior Bristol Brandt followed close behind, tying for 25th place with rounds of 94 and 97.
Yowell and Brandt are the only returners from last year’s team, but Yowell thinks the team will improve week by week.
“We definitely need to work on our approach shots,” Yowell said. “We’re (hitting well) off the tee, but hitting greens in regulation seems to be an issue for all of us.”
The men’s team played its first tournament of the fall Monday and Tuesday at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Mo. The Wildcats placed seventh overall and were led by sophomore Andy Kelley.
Kelley shot an opening round of 83 Monday and came back to shoot rounds of 75 and 78 Tuesday.
“It was the first tournament, so it’s early in the season,” Kelley said. “We know that we are a lot better than that.”
The men’s and women’s teams will play their second tournament of the fall season Monday and Tuesday at Eagle Bend Golf Course in Lawrence.
