The Baker University men’s tennis team had a successful weekend Saturday in Hillsboro, where they competed in a triangular meet with Tabor College and Missouri Baptist University.
The Wildcats had a winning record against both teams, beating Missouri Baptist University 7-1 and Tabor College 6-3.
“Even though we won I wasn’t all that impressed with how we played,” head coach Joe Ahmadian said. “[Freshman] Nick Baker had a pretty good singles match, but other than that we didn’t play especially well.”
The Baker women’s tennis team also had matches Saturday, squaring off against Missouri Baptist University. Missouri Baptist beat the Wildcats 5-4.
“It came down to [sophomore Caitlyn Metseff’s] third set and she lost,” Ahmadian said. “The ends of matches are something we need to become more mature with.”
Ahmadian plans to work on getting to the net quicker and more often with the teams and focus a little more on doubles play.
“When it comes to the close matches, I think we’re really young,” Ahmadian said. “I don’t want to say we get nervous, but when it comes down to crunch time we don’t perform as well as we should.”
The Wildcats continue their season 9 a.m. Saturday at home against Bethel College and Missouri Valley College on the Laury Tennis Courts.
