Fourth annual Tackling Hunger Food Drive underway

Story by Jim Joyner, Sports Editor

The fifth annual County Line Clash football game between Baker and Ottawa is approaching, which means that the fourth annual Tackling Hunger Food Drive is underway for bragging rights between the two schools.

The Tackling Hunger Food Drive was created to get students from both schools to collect non-perishable canned goods for a food pantry in Baldwin City and Ottawa. In the first three years Ottawa leads the series 2-1.

In the first two Tackling Hunger Food Drives combined, Ottawa collected approximately 1,000 more total cans than Baker.

2013 was an entirely different story. Baker’s Baldwin City campus teamed up with the School of Professional and Graduate Studies and collected 2,916 cans. This was 2,243 cans more than Ottawa.

Students can drop off their non-perishable canned goods in the lobbies of Irwin Hall, Gessner Hall, the New Living Center and Harter Union. They can also be taken to room 33 in the Harter Union.

The winner will be announced at the game on Sept. 6 at Peoples Bank Field.

Baker Serves is responsible for collecting the canned goods for the Baldwin City Food Pantry located in the basement of the First United Methodist Church at the corner of 8th and Grove streets. Ottawa’s collections will go to a food pantry in Ottawa.
