‘Big Hero 6’ entertains all ages

Having already fallen in love with Disney’s Tangled, Wreck-it-Ralph and Frozen, it came as no surprise to me that I enjoyed its new animated feature Big Hero 6 released this last weekend. With adorable characters and a fun-filled plot, Big Hero 6 is another Disney masterpiece.

From start to finish, Big Hero 6 kept a fast-moving pace without losing its younger audience members. Action-packed with robot fights, car races and several superhero battles, the film had everything needed to entertain all ages.

Take away the explosions and combat scenes and Disney still provides a tale of timeless loyalty and friendship. Regardless of whether or not it’s the relationship between the main character, Hiro Hamada, a 14-year-old boy-genius who graduated high school at age 13, and his brother Tadashi, his brother’s robot Baymax, or their many quirky and inventive friends, every relationship in the film is intensely emotional and heartwarming.

If I had to pick a favorite element of Big Hero 6, I would undoubtedly choose its characters. Hiro is a lovable, little brother protagonist who captures the heart of audiences as he struggles through the film, but every character in the movie is a potential audience favorite.

Hiro’s unique “nerd school” friends Wasabi, GoGo, Honey and Fred use their individual imaginations and ingenuity to team up with Tadashi’s health care robot Baymax, a loving, air-filled, balloon bot designed to take care of the sick or injured. They save their home from the threatening mastermind, micro bots while mourning the death of a dear friend.

Each character has its own set of quirks and perks as they come together as friends and robotic engineers. Using their favorite tools and inventions, the band of friends fight for justice and against revenge, winning the hearts of viewers.

In the theater it was obvious that the crowd’s favorite character was the ever endearing Baymax. Cuddly, cute and a major comedic character, I could see why Baymax was loved by the masses. That being said, I have a different favorite.

Though he doesn’t get as much screentime as Hiro and his robot companion, my favorite character is the comic book loving Fred. Wishing he was fire-breathing dragon and loving everything superhero, his character defies the stereotypical in surprising ways and compels the group to become Big Hero 6. Without Fred, the movie simply wouldn’t be the same.

Big Hero 6 is a film for the whole family with lovable characters and a plotline that doesn’t disappoint. To quote another Disney favorite, I’d give it “Two thumbs way, way up!”
