Baker Serves hosts Civic Engagement Month

Story by Jenna Warmund, Writer

In an effort to provide opportunities for BU students to serve the community, the campus volunteer club, Baker Serves, is hosting a yearlong project called Civic Engagement.

The project has begun with the County Line Clash Food Drive in conjunction with the season-opening BU football game in Ottawa.

Shevonne Booze, the advisor for Baker Serves, said that Civic Engagement is more than a project for the students involved; it’s a way of life. The club is devoted to assisting those in need and preparing service projects in and out of Baldwin City.

“Baker Serves is committed to initiation and activating service opportunities which leave a lasting impression on the community and world around us,” Booze said.

Baker Serves President Ryan Johns looks forward to the chance to help out others during Civil Engagement.

“I have always had a love for serving others and Baker Serves was a great opportunity to serve my community and also be a leader on my campus,” Johns said.

Baker Serves has planned a number of various events for the project, including a mobile soup kitchen, a “Wildcat sleep out” and even a glow-run.

“This organization, or even just getting involved on campus serving others, can be a life-changing experience if you let it,” Johns said. “Serving is the greatest gift you can give another.”
