SAC to host Safe Break Day with ‘mocktails’

The Student Activities Council, the Student Health Center and the Residence Life Department will host Safe Spring Break events on Wednesday, March 11. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Long Student Center, students can enjoy free “mocktails” while learning facts about alcohol.

SAC member Jami Sanborn assisted in putting together this event, which is designed to help students prepare for spring break safety.

“The purpose of the event was to make sure that everyone has a safe spring break by informing them about some fun facts about alcohol,” Sanborn said. “I would encourage students to go to this event because it might teach students something they didn’t know about alcohol.”

Mocktails are non-alcoholic versions of typical alcoholic beverages. SAC members will be serving strawberry and blue raspberry slushies in the Long Student Center. Freshman SAC member Holly Chestnut said that this will be a place for students to take a break from midterms, without alcohol. It encourages both being social and being safe.

“The virgin drinks are to encourage students to approach spring break vacation with caution while still having a great time with their friends and family,” Chestnut said.

Randy Flowers, director of student life, said that the Safe Break Day will also be a learning experience for students.

“Students will be provided tips via signs that will be posted all over the campus, while also attaching educational components to the mocktails,” Flowers said. “Also, there will be booths setup to provide guidance to be prepared for spring break.”

Flowers organized Safe Day Break with the help of many other clubs and organizations. He credits them for helping him coordinate this event and making it possible.

“We organized a group of offices across the university that could help make this event successful,” Flowers said.

Flowers encourages students to take a break from their studies and attend Safe Break Day.

“The purpose of Safe Spring Break is to celebrate that spring break is here, while providing some educational components on what can occur during spring break and what students can do to have fun while still being safe,” he said. “Students should attend to have a moment to step back and relax. Get a slushy and be excited that spring break is here.”
