During this week’s World Series games, if the Kansas City Royals have scored, you can clearly hear students clapping in the Horn and Markham apartments. Many BU students are rooting for the Royals, and a couple of baseball players, Tyler Brough and Colt Brennan, have developed unusual rituals for watching the games.

Brough said he has worn his Mike Moustakas jersey for every game during this postseason and last postseason. He also relies heavily on his Nintendo 64 for good results.

“This started last year because my roommate and I were sitting in our dorm room playing Nintendo 64 and watching the games,” Brough said. “We won the first three while playing it, so I said I’m just going to leave it on the whole postseason.”

Brough and his roommate continued to leave it on for the rest of the postseason, and even though the Royals didn’t win the World Series last year, it hasn’t stopped him.

“This year I was like, ‘I’m just going to do the same thing.’ Every time there’s been a game, I’ve had it on,” Brough said.

For Brennan, the Royals being able to clinch so many key games could be due to the Colorado Rockies. Brennan said he wore a Rockies shirt all day for Game 5 of the ALDS, which the Royals won to advance the ALCS. Then he wore the same shirt for Game 6 of the ALCS, which the Royals won to advance to the World Series.

For Game 1 of the World Series, Brennan did not wear his Rockies shirt in the beginning.

“Right after (Eric) Hosmer had the error to let the leading run in, one of my roommates said, ‘Cort, go put on that shirt,'” Brennan said. “I go put it on and Gordon hits a home run to tie the game, so now it’s changed from wearing it on clinching games to wearing it anytime anything goes bad in Royals games.”

He said he usually sits in the same chair for about five or six innings then gets up to pace the room for the rest of the game. Brennan isn’t the only one in his apartment who believes in superstitions. If it’s into the late innings and the Royals are losing, everyone in the room will get up and switch seats. Even the people in the kitchen have to switch seats, Brennan said.

The World Series will continue this weekend in New York, so Brough likely will have his Nintendo 64 turned on, and if the Royals fall behind, Brennan will probably put on his Rockies shirt.
