Sophomore Chris Cummins’ no-hitter through five innings was not enough to lift the Baker baseball team over Rogers State University Saturday.

The Wildcats dropped their season opener 2-1 in Claremore, Okla., after a 1-0 advantage heading into the sixth inning. The Hillcats’ two-run effort in the seventh sealed the deal in game one of the doubleheader.

“We played extremely well,” head coach Phil Hannon said. “As a matter of fact, we out-hit them, but we just couldn’t get things to bounce our way.”

In game two, the Hillcats warmed up quickly, scoring two runs in the first inning. BU answered with a run in the second, but came up short 2-1.

Hannon said he was pleased with the team’s defensive and pitching efforts in both contests.

“I was extremely proud of how our guys played, we just have to build on that now and find that winning way,” he said.
