Baker track teams place at HAAC championships

The Baker University track and field teams traveled to Lamoni, Iowa, to compete in the HAAC Indoor Championships Feb. 19 and 20.

The men placed fourth with a score of 74 points, while the women’s team placed fifth overall with 87 points.

Baker had four women capture first in their events: senior Kayla Irwin (pole vault), junior Carrie Lister (shot put), freshmen Corinna Papps (1,000-meter run) and Shayna Mangiaracino (pentathlon).

“The competition was very tough,” Papps said. “I felt like I did better, though, because it was conference.”

Senior Brian Korn stood out with a second-place showing in the shot put with a mark of 15.31 meters. Freshman Travis Miller finished third in the long jump, eighth in the triple jump and fifth in the high jump.

“Our team was very determined,” Miller said. “It made us all focus and compete our best.”
